Speed Queen is Milwaukee's best barbecue, serving pork; beef,, and turkey cooked until ridiculously tender and served in a glaze of spicy sauce. The mild sauce is robust and slightly sweet. Hot sauce is explosive, a dark orange emulsion.

It's a good thing it works fast,, because the aroma inside Speed Queen is so appetizing that it makes us weak with hunger. You smell it even in the parking lot-a come-hither perfume of smoldering hickory, apple wood, maple, and oak combined with slow-sizzling beef and pork-and the moment you enter; the aroma wallops your brain directly in the place where desire and hunger reside.

Best Sandwiches

The sandwiches are wonderful. Slices of pork shoulder slow- cooked over a hardwood fire and served with a zingy Southern-style barbecue sauce. That white bread bends around beautifully.

You Could Almost call us Rib City

Slow-burning hardwood isn't done in restaurants here, with the exception of Speed Queen; 1130 W. Walnut St. The ribs and especially the pork shoulder are very good and available as carry-outs at the North Side establishment, which has a Spartan atmosphere.

Pork and Chicken are real treats at the re-opened Speed Queen

When fire hit Speed Queen Bar-B-Q September 1993, I had some real fears that Milwaukee would lose one of its real takeout food treasures.

Speed Queen has been serving Milwaukee some of the best barbecued ribs, pork and chicken in town. Their re-opening added fried orders to the menu. The perch delivered fillets; each breaded in a crunchy cornmeal coating, and then fried to a delightful golden crisp.
